LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH AT HOME: FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT

In this Advent season, our family decided to start a new tradition in our home. We will be lighting candles in an Advent Wreath daily. It is our way of spending time together in preparing for the approaching celebration of the birth of Christ.

Our Advent Wreath holds five candles: three purple, one rose (or pink) and one white. These will be lit, one at a time, on each of the four Weeks of the Advent season.

Our devotion started tonight (Saturday before the first Sunday in Advent) before our evening meal. Our family gathered together around the Advent wreath and started off our ceremony with the blessing of the wreath. Hubby, which is the head of our household was the one designated in blessing the wreath and saying the prayers.

After the prayer, our youngest child lights the first purple candle. She’s the one assigned to light the candle each day during the first week. We plan to take turns in lighting and blowing the candles so everyone will have a task each day. The candle is allowed to burn during the evening meals.

The Advent Wreath tradition is a wonderful devotion for the family where each will be drawn into deeper conversion to Christ through its symbolism and meaning.

The first Week of Advent symbolizes Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that Jesus is coming.
